The story

Serge Lutens: the artist, photographer and film-maker turned perfumer

A house founded in 1992 by a complete aesthete

Serge Lutens is one of the most singular figures in haute parfumerie. A photographer, film-maker, painter and Shiseido's artistic director for more than twenty years, he founded his perfume house in 1992 with one certainty: perfumery must be an art, not an industry. Based in Marrakech for decades, he draws his inspiration from Morocco, its spices, the souk and the light. His perfumes are timeless olfactory poems, blending oriental materials and unexpected accords.

The French house's emblematic fragrances

The Serge Lutens pantheon brings together Ambre Sultan, Fleurs d'oranger, Bois roi d'Agalloche, Le perce-vent, Five o'clock au gingembre and Un bois vanille: so many signatures that have established the house among niche lovers.

Four collections to explore Serge Lutens

The house organises its catalogue into four distinct lines. The Collection Noire is the historic heart of the house: the eaux de parfum in the emblematic black bottles. The Matin Lutens collection turns the morning ritual into fresh eaux. The Gratte-Ciel collection evokes urban verticality. Finally, the Rituel de Parfum collection extends the fragrance into body rituals and accessories.

Who is Serge Lutens for, and when to wear it?

Serge Lutens is for lovers of timeless writing, looking for a perfumery that endures and expresses an identity. The house is unisex. The floral creations shine in spring, while the oriental, amber and gourmand ones come into their own all year round. If you like Serge Lutens, you will also enjoy exploring Caron, Houbigant and Stéphane Humbert Lucas, three other French auteur signatures at Soleil d'Or.

Frequently asked questions about Serge Lutens

Who is Serge Lutens?

Serge Lutens was born on 14 March 1942 in Lille — a detail particularly dear to Soleil d'Or, since we have been based in the same city since 1953. A multifaceted artist (photographer, film-maker, make-up and perfume creator), he shaped Dior's image in the 1970s and then turned Shiseido into a global brand in the 1980s. In 2000, he founded his own perfume house within the Shiseido group, which has since become independent.

Why is Féminité du Bois a cult perfume?

Created in 1992 at the instigation of Serge Lutens (perfumers Pierre Bourdon and Christopher Sheldrake), Féminité du Bois revolutionised perfumery by bringing cedarwood — then a typically masculine note — into a women's creation. With 10% cedar in the composition (compared with the usual 2-3%), it created a new olfactory family: feminine woods. Originally at Shiseido, the perfume joined the Serge Lutens collection in 2009. It is considered a monument of modern perfumery.

What are the Serge Lutens collections?

Serge Lutens organises its perfumery into several distinct collections. Matin Lutens offers airy, luminous fragrances. Rituel de Parfum gathers the house's most precious creations. Gratte-Ciel explores urban architecture. Not forgetting the iconic classics of the Collection Noire: Ambre Sultan, Tubéreuse Criminelle, Cuir Mauresque, À la Nuit, Chergui, Féminité du Bois.

Does Soleil d'Or offer Serge Lutens samples?

Yes, we offer up to 3 free samples with every order. Serge Lutens perfumes are particularly well suited to sample trials because they have a strong character — they are best tamed over several days rather than judged on first impression. Our discovery box lets you explore several creations before committing. Apolline and Victorine can guide you according to your olfactory preferences.

Where to start with Serge Lutens?

For a first discovery, Apolline and Victorine often suggest Féminité du Bois (a round, fruity cedar, the first love of many of our customers) or Chergui (a sunny leather fougère, more accessible). For lovers of oriental perfumes, Ambre Sultan and Arabie remain high points. For floral lovers, À la Nuit (an overdose of Sambac jasmine) is a must. A special detail: Serge Lutens is from Lille, like us — a perfume signed by a child of the North.
