Musk in perfumery: the note that smells of skin

Where does musk come from today?

The original musk came from a gland of the musk deer, an animal of Central Asia. That source has vanished from modern perfumery: it has been banned since 1979, and it was in any case no longer tenable. The musks you smell today are therefore molecules recreated in the laboratory, grouped into families — macrocyclic, polycyclic and nitro musks — each with its own character, from the cleanest to the most carnal. There is also a plant route: the seed of ambrette, whose absolute yields a natural musk, powdery and lightly fruity. This recreation is no second best: it opened up a far wider palette than the animal material ever offered.

What does musk smell like?

Musk is not one smell but a register. There is white musk, clean and cottony, the smell of laundry fresh out of the dryer. There is creamy, milky musk, almost a skin of warm milk. And there is warm, carnal, faintly animalic musk that extends the smell of the body without ever covering it. Its real particularity lies elsewhere: musk does not sit in front, it sits underneath. It rounds off the edges, stretches the wear time and creates that trail you still find on a jumper. One detail worth knowing: part of the population is anosmic to certain musk molecules, meaning literally unable to smell them. Two people can therefore wear the same perfume and not perceive the same thing.

Musk accords and fragrance families

Musk is a binder more than a soloist. With vanilla and sandalwood, it builds the creamy musky perfumes that dominate contemporary perfumery. Beneath a rose or a jasmine, it strips the flower of its prim side and brings it closer to the skin. Paired with iris, it produces cool, elegant powdery accords. It also serves as a base for floral perfumes and gourmand perfumes, where it keeps the sugar from turning cloying. Few modern formulas do without it.

Who is it for, and when?

Musk is the most unisex note in perfumery: nothing in its smell points to a gender. It is also the easiest to wear day to day, because it stays close to the body and does not impose itself on the room. Office, commuting, meetings, long days: white and milky musks belong there all year round. Warm, carnal musks ask for more intent and come into their own in the evening, or in winter, on a scarf. On dry skin, musk fades quickly and is better sprayed on clothing; on oily skin it lasts a long time and gains in volume.

How to choose your musky perfume

Musk is the note you absolutely must try on yourself, for two reasons: it reacts strongly to skin, and you have no guarantee of perceiving the same molecules as the person next to you.
