Houbigant Paris: four centuries of French perfumery

A house founded in 1775 by Jean-François Houbigant

Jean-François Houbigant opened the boutique « À la Corbeille de Fleurs » on rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré in Paris in 1775. The house went on to perfume the French court and the crowned heads of Europe: Joséphine de Beauharnais, Queen Victoria — granting it a royal warrant in 1838 — and the court of Tsar Alexander III. Revived in 2005 by the Perris family, the house presents itself, in its official history, as the only perfume house to have crossed four centuries. It is also a house of inventions: in 1882, Paul Parquet created Fougère Royale, the first fragrance built on synthetic coumarin, founding the fougère family; in 1912, Robert Bienaimé signed Quelques Fleurs, the first great multi-floral bouquet.

Founded in 1953 by Jeanne Muyllaert on Lille's Grand'Place, Soleil d'Or is an independent perfumery passed down through generations. Hubert Maes (third generation) made it a reference for niche perfumery; today his daughters Victorine and Apolline Maes (fourth generation) uphold this standard at 22 rue de la Clef, Lille (59800), France.

Quelques Fleurs: what is the difference between the versions?

Quelques Fleurs L'Original (1912) is the reference multi-floral bouquet — rose, jasmine, iris, violet, musk —, available as an Eau de Parfum, an Extrait de Parfum and a more concentrated Collection Privée version. Quelques Fleurs Royale is its more intense reading; Quelques Fleurs Jardin Secret, the woodiest and most contemporary version. All share the multi-floral DNA of 1912.

Are there Houbigant perfumes for men?

Yes — Duc de Vervins (1985) is the house's great masculine classic: a woody aromatic, available as an Eau de Parfum and an Eau de Toilette.
