Annick Goutal: an author's perfumery, emotion before marketing

Who was Annick Goutal?

Annick Goutal was first a pianist, then a model, before becoming one of the great figures of French perfumery. Trained in Grasse under perfumer Henri Sorsana, she learned composition the old way — by nose and by memory, far from industrial laboratories. She opened her first Paris boutique in 1981 and asserted an idea that was singular at the time: a perfume must come from an emotion, a memory, a beloved face — never from market research. She composed for those close to her: Petite Chérie was created for her daughter Camille. She died in 1999, aged 53.

The story of the house, from 1981 to today

Born in Paris in 1981, the house claims an author's perfumery: emotion before marketing, sincerity before strategy, the belief that a perfume can be whispered rather than proclaimed. After the founder's death, her daughter Camille Goutal watched over the creative heritage, long alongside perfumer Isabelle Doyen. Renamed Goutal Paris in the late 2010s, the house was acquired by the French group Interparfums in March 2025 and recovered its original name. The catalogue is organised around three official collections: Les Incontournables, Les Féminins and Les Mixtes. Discover more on the official website.

The signature fragrances of the house

Eau d'Hadrien, a sunlit citrus inspired by Tuscan gardens, remains the absolute signature of the house, alongside Petite Chérie and Sables, immortelle and curry over Breton dunes. More seasoned enthusiasts seek out Un Matin d'Orage, Ambre Sauvage, Encens Flamboyant, Musc Nomade or Le Temps des Rêves — the fragrances behind the house's confidential reputation.

Who is Annick Goutal for, and when to wear it?

The house speaks to those who prefer an intimate perfume to a demonstrative trail. The citrus and floral scents carry spring and summer, while the amber and musky ones suit the cold seasons. If you love this style of writing, explore La Closerie des Parfums and the latest Goutal Paris editions.

Frequently asked questions about Annick Goutal perfumes

Who was Annick Goutal?

Annick Goutal was a pianist and model turned perfumer, who founded her house in Paris in 1981 after training in Grasse under Henri Sorsana — a pioneer of author's perfumery. She composed every fragrance as the story of an emotion or a memory, from Eau d'Hadrien to Petite Chérie, created for her daughter Camille. She died in 1999 aged 53, passing her vision on to Camille Goutal.

Who bought Goutal?

The French group Interparfums acquired the house in March 2025, buying the brand's intellectual property outright and bringing it back under French ownership. Founded in 1981 as Annick Goutal, it had been renamed Goutal Paris in the late 2010s by its previous owner Amorepacific, before recovering its original name. So it is indeed the same house — you will also find the latest Goutal Paris editions at Soleil d'Or.

What is the most famous Annick Goutal perfume?

Eau d'Hadrien has been the icon of the house since 1981: an ode to Tuscan citrus — lemon, citron, grapefruit. Petite Chérie (pear, rose, vanilla) and Sables (immortelle, amber) complete Les Incontournables, alongside Eau d'Hadrien Mixte, its unisex version.

Who creates Annick Goutal perfumes today?

Camille Goutal, the founder's daughter, watches over the creative heritage of the house, long alongside perfumer Isabelle Doyen. Recent creations also call on noses such as Mathieu Nardin or Julie Massé, faithful to the author's spirit of 1981.

Are Annick Goutal perfumes unisex?

Many are — the house sorts its fragrances into three official lines: Les Mixtes (Eau d'Hadrien Mixte, Musc Nomade, Sables, Encens Flamboyant, Ambre Sauvage), Les Féminins (Petite Chérie, Un Matin d'Orage, Le Temps des Rêves) and Les Incontournables.
