Iris in perfumery: nine years for a smell

A rhizome, not a flower

Perfumery iris smells nothing like the flower you know. What is used is its rhizome, the underground stem of Iris pallida grown in Tuscany or of Iris germanica. The cycle is slow beyond comparison: the plant grows for three years, the rhizomes are then lifted and cleaned, and they have to be left to dry for three to six further years. It is during that drying that the irones form — the molecules that carry the entire smell. Nine years, then, before obtaining an orris butter whose yield is counted in grams. That is why it ranks among the most costly materials on a perfumer's palette.

What does iris smell like?

Like something hard to describe and immediately recognisable: cold, powdery, faintly buttery, with a vegetal facet that recalls raw carrot and fresh root. There is also a kinship with violet, which shares the same molecules. Some readings are mineral, almost metallic; others creamy and cosmetic, close to face powder. Iris does not warm, it creates distance: that is what gives it its reputation for a slightly cool elegance. On skin it settles slowly and lasts a long time without ever imposing itself.

Iris perfumes at Le Soleil d'Or

Gris Charnel by BDK Parfums, created by Mathilde Bijaoui, pairs it with tea and fig for a carnal effect. From the same house, 312 Saint-Honore by Alexandra Carlin gives the most powdery and most Parisian version. Iris accords and fragrance families

Iris is the powdery note. With violet and heliotrope, it builds the cosmetic, retro accords. Laid over a sandalwood or a musk, it turns creamy and wearable; set against leather and vetiver, it produces the dry, graphic compositions niche perfumery is fond of. It also freshens woody perfumes and takes the excess sugar out of gourmand perfumes. A rose laid over an iris becomes immediately more grown-up.

Who is it for, and when?

Iris is unisex, and it is probably the most elegant note you can wear to the office: discreet, long-lasting, never gourmand. It does take a little getting used to, though — its cold, rooty side is disconcerting on a first try, especially if you are expecting a flower. It suits every season, with a preference for the in-between seasons and winter, where its powdery coolness works wonders. On warm skin, iris warms up and turns creamier; on cool skin it stays mineral and distant.

How to choose your iris perfume

Do not judge an iris in thirty seconds: it is the material that demands the most patience in all of perfumery. It unfolds slowly and changes a great deal between the first hour and the third.
