Labdanum is not a flower but a gum. It seeps from the branches of the rockrose, a tough shrub of the dry scrublands of Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Crete. The harvest is an old craft: shepherds once combed the coats of goats that had brushed against the bushes, before a rake fitted with leather straps replaced the animal. Today the branches are boiled, the gum rises to the surface, and it is then refined into concrete, resinoid and absolute. The rockrose, its parent plant, has its own page at Soleil d'Or. Used since antiquity for fumigation and ointments, labdanum remains one of the pillars of modern base accords.

What does labdanum smell like?

Labdanum opens on an impression of dark honey and dried fruit. A balsamic, almost resinous warmth follows, doubled by a leathery facet and a discreet animal depth close to ambergris. Beeswax appears, dry hay, sometimes a tarry bitterness. On skin the material softens: the smoky angles round off, the honeyed sweetness takes over, and the whole becomes fuller and more enveloping. Longevity is remarkable, often more than a day on fabric, and the trail stays dense without ever shouting. This is a base material: it reveals itself after a few minutes, rarely on the first spray.

Accords and fragrance families

Labdanum agrees with everything warm. With vanilla and balsams it builds the classic amber accord, the signature of oriental perfumes. Set against patchouli and oakmoss, it structures the base of chypres and lends them their slightly earthy footing. Paired with leather, tobacco and smoked resins, it produces dark, almost tarry accords. It also serves as a plinth for deep roses and spicy woods, keeping them from turning too dry. Few families exclude it: traces of labdanum turn up even in modern fougères, in tiny but decisive quantities. Rarely does a base material travel so easily between opposite families.

Who is it for, and when?

Labdanum has no gender. It brings gravity to floral compositions and softness to dry woods, which makes it a naturally shared material. Its warmth suits cold seasons first: autumn, winter, evenings, coat collars turned up. In its sunnier readings, blended with skin notes and dried fruit, it still holds up very well in summer at the end of the day. It speaks to people who like enveloping amber perfumes, trails you find again the next morning on a scarf, and who prefer density to freshness. On warm skin it turns honeyed; on cool skin, more resinous and severe.
