Frequently asked questions about Perfumes

What is niche perfumery?

Niche perfumery refers to fragrances created outside mass distribution channels — by independent houses that prioritise raw material quality, creative freedom for perfumers and compositional originality over commercial imperatives. Unlike mass-market perfumes, niche creations do not bend to trends or consumer testing. Houses like Creed (founded 1760), Houbigant (1775), Goutal, Memo or Initio embody this philosophy. Soleil d'Or has selected and represented them since 1953 in Lille.

What are the best niche perfume brands?

The most iconic houses at Soleil d'Or: Creed (1760 · Aventus, Millésime Impérial) · Houbigant (1775 · Quelques Fleurs) · Goutal (1981 · Petite Chérie) · Memo (2007 · French Leather) · Initio (2015 · Oud for Greatness) · Matière Première (2019 · Radical Rose) · Essential Parfums · Jeroboam · Jovoy · Atelier des Ors 55 selected houses, 900+ creations.

How to choose your niche perfume?

To choose your niche perfume well, we recommend starting by identifying your preferred olfactory family: floral · woody · oriental · aromatic · hesperidic. Then explore houses in that family. Our women's perfumes, men's perfumes and unisex perfumes organise the catalogue by profile. Our discovery box (5 samples of 2 mL of your choice) lets you test before investing. Soleil d'Or advisors, in-store in Lille or via chat, are also here to guide you.

Is the Parfumerie du Soleil d'Or an authorised retailer?

Yes — the Parfumerie du Soleil d'Or is an official and authorised retailer for all brands in its catalogue. This guarantees the authenticity and traceability of every flacon. Products come directly from the brands' official French distributors. The boutique maintains long-term partnerships — sometimes spanning several decades — with houses like Creed, Goutal and Houbigant. Founded in 1953, it is one of the longest-established niche perfumeries in France.

What is the difference between EDP, EDC and perfume extract?

Perfume extract (or pure parfum): 20-40% concentration · 10-12h longevity · deep, evolving trail — favoured by Jeroboam and Bohoboco. Eau de parfum (EDP): 15-20% · 6-8h longevity · the dominant format in niche perfumery — Creed, Goutal, Memo, Essential Parfums primarily offer EDPs. Eau de cologne (EDC): 2-5% · immediate freshness · 2-3h longevity. Our discovery box lets you compare concentrations before buying.
