Bergamot in perfumery: the citrus that opens everything
Bergamot, a Calabrian citrus
Citrus bergamia grows almost nowhere else. A coastal strip a few dozen kilometres long, around Reggio Calabria, supplies most of the world's production — a matter of soil, humidity and sea wind. The fruit is not eaten: it is far too bitter. Only its peel counts, cold-pressed to yield a green, fleeting essence; it takes around two hundred kilos of fruit for one kilo of essence. Modern perfumery also works with a version stripped of its furocoumarins, the molecules that make skin photosensitive, which allows it to be dosed generously with no risk in the sun.
What does bergamot smell like?
Not like lemon, and that is the most widespread confusion. Bergamot is rounder, more floral, shot through with an elegant bitterness and that black-tea facet familiar from Earl Grey. You can also detect a hint of neroli and a lightly green side. Its real particularity is its volatility: it is almost entirely gone within a quarter of an hour. That is not a flaw, it is its function — it opens the door, establishes an impression of cleanliness and light, then hands over to the heart of the perfume.
Bergamot perfumes at Le Soleil d'Or
Nice Bergamote by Essential Parfums, created by Antoine Maisondieu, is the textbook case: here the material is the subject, not the introduction. Aventus by Creed uses it to launch its smoky fruity accord, and Erba Pura by Xerjoff to brighten a sweet base. At Parfums de Marly, ALTHAIR by Hamid Merati-Kashani sets it against a milky vanilla. More solar, Gioiosa by Profumum Roma plays it in full Mediterranean light, while Gozo by Jeroboam uses it as a counterpoint to an oriental base.
Bergamot accords and fragrance families
Bergamot is the key to three major families. With lavender, oakmoss and coumarin, it forms the structure of fougere perfumes. With patchouli and moss, it opens chypre perfumes. And paired with lemon, mandarin and petitgrain, it gives us citrus perfumes and eaux de Cologne. It also works as a counterweight: a few drops are enough to lighten a vanilla or an oud that would otherwise threaten to be too heavy.
Who is it for, and when?
It is probably the most consensual note in perfumery: unisex, legible, never divisive. It suits every season, with an obvious advantage in spring and summer, and it is particularly well suited to the office and to shared spaces, where a dense trail becomes a nuisance. One thing to know: if you are looking for a perfume that smells of bergamot all day long, you will be disappointed. It sets the tone of the first few minutes, and then the heart and the base decide what everyone else will smell.
How to choose your bergamot perfume
The rule is simple and counter-intuitive: never judge a citrus perfume on its opening. Almost all of them are seductive in the first minute, and that is exactly where bergamot does its work. What matters is what is left after two hours. The bespoke discovery box brings together five hand-filled 2 mL samples: wear them for a full day and the question settles itself. To get your bearings, compare a bergamot treated as the main subject, Nice Bergamote, with a bergamot opening over a powerful base, Aventus.
