Vanilla in perfumery: from orchid to trail
Vanilla, the pod of a climbing orchid
Vanilla is neither a spice nor a flower in the ordinary sense: it is the fruit of a vine orchid, Vanilla planifolia, native to Mexico. Outside its home range the pollinating insect does not exist, so every flower has to be fertilised by hand, one by one, on the very morning it opens. Then comes nine months of curing — blanching, sweating, drying, conditioning — during which the green, odourless pod develops its aromas. Madagascar and Réunion produce Bourbon vanilla; Tahiti grows a distinct species, Vanilla tahitensis, more anisic and floral. From this pod, perfumery draws an absolute, a CO₂ extract and more targeted fractions.
What does vanilla smell like?
Far more than cake. Raw vanilla absolute is dark: it smells of rum, prune, blond tobacco, leather and a light smoke. Sweetness only appears afterwards, and usually because the perfumer wanted it there, by pairing it with milky or caramelised notes. Bourbon vanilla gives a round, rich, almost buttery profile; Tahitian vanilla leans towards anise and heliotrope, more powdery and more floral. On skin, the material settles slowly and lasts a long time: it is a base note, to be judged after an hour, not at the moment you spray.
Vanilla perfumes at Soleil d'Or
VANILLA POWDER by Matière Première, created by Aurélien Guichard, gives the powdery, dry reading, against the sweet cliche. Ambre Latte by Essential Parfums, composed by Jordi Fernández, pushes it towards milky amber. At Chambre52, Soleil Tonka by Jean-Christophe Hérault pairs it with tonka bean for a warm solar effect. Naxos by Xerjoff marries it to tobacco and honey, while Velvet Tonka by BDK Parfums turns it into woody velvet. Five vanillas, five characters.
Vanilla accords and fragrance families
Vanilla is the foundation of oriental perfumes: paired with benzoin, labdanum and balsams, it forms the classic amber accord. With tonka bean, caramel and cocoa, it tips into gourmand perfumes. Set against leather, tobacco or incense, it turns dark and grown-up. And beneath citrus perfumes or a neroli, it lends body to compositions that would otherwise lack staying power.
Who is it for, and when?
Vanilla is unisex, despite a stubborn reputation: smoked, rummy and leathery vanillas are overwhelmingly worn by men, and powdery vanillas are assigned to no one. Its warmth suits autumn and winter first of all, evenings and the heavy clothing that holds a trail. Milky and solar readings, on the other hand, hold up very well in summer, especially at the end of the day. One point worth keeping in mind: vanilla amplifies on warm skin. What seems discreet on a strip can become generous on you, so spray less than usual on your first try.
How to choose your vanilla perfume
The trap is judging too quickly: vanilla takes an hour to unfold and changes a great deal as it dries down. Compare at home rather than at the counter. The bespoke discovery box brings together five hand-filled 2 mL samples; wear each one for a full day. Take two opposite directions to get your bearings: a dry, powdery vanilla such as VANILLA POWDER, and a milky, sweet vanilla such as Bianco Latte by Giardini di Toscana. In the Lille boutique, the team will let you smell them one after the other, which makes the gap immediately legible.
Vanilla at Soleil d'Or, a Lille perfumery since 1953
Founded in 1953 by Jeanne Muyllaert on the Grand'Place in Lille, Soleil d'Or is an independent perfumery passed down from one generation to the next. Hubert Maës (third generation) turned it into a reference for niche perfumery; today his daughters Victorine and Apolline Maës (fourth generation) uphold the same standards at 22 rue de la Clef, Lille (59800). Our team will let you smell the vanilla perfumes in the catalogue, with expert advice and guided trials, and can point you in the right direction using our guide to fragrance families.
