Mandarin in perfumery: the gentle citrus

Green, yellow or red: three essences, one fruit

Citrus reticulata is grown in Italy, in Sicily and in Brazil, and it is the peel that is cold-pressed — never the pulp. What makes this citrus unusual is that the same tree is harvested at three stages. Green mandarin, picked before ripeness, gives a nervy, bitter, almost floral essence. The yellow is the most balanced. The red, picked fully ripe, is round, sweet, almost candied. A perfumer writing “mandarin” is first of all choosing between those three characters, and the gap is immediately audible. Mandarin is also distinct from clementine, a hybrid of mandarin and bitter orange, and from tangerine, its North American trade name.

What does mandarin smell like?

Of a juicy, sweet citrus, without the sharpness of lemon or the breadth of orange. There is a floral facet, almost neroli, and a slightly bitter edge that comes from the peel. It is the gentlest citrus on the palette, the one given to children and associated with Christmas. Like all hesperidic notes it is volatile: it occupies the first ten to twenty minutes, sets up an impression of luminous cleanliness, then hands over to the heart.

Mandarin accords and fragrance families

Mandarin naturally opens hesperidic perfumes, alongside bergamot and petitgrain. Its sweetness also makes it an excellent partner for gourmand perfumes: set on a vanilla or a caramel, it lightens the sugar without contradicting it. With orange blossom and neroli it composes the sunlit Mediterranean accords; over a musk or a sandalwood it gives those clear, wearable woody perfumes that contemporary perfumery keeps multiplying.

Who is it for, and when?

It is probably the least divisive citrus in perfumery: unisex, legible, never polarising, and particularly well suited to the office and to shared spaces. It works in every season, with an obvious advantage in spring and summer, and the gourmand readings hold up very well in winter. One thing to know before buying: if you are looking for a perfume that smells of mandarin all day, you will be disappointed. Like all top notes, it sets the tone of the first few minutes, and then the heart and the base decide.

How to choose your mandarin perfume

The rule for hesperidic fragrances applies here more than anywhere else: never judge on the opening. Almost every mandarin perfume is seductive in the first minute, and that is exactly where the note does its work. What matters is what remains after two hours.
