Clementine, a citrus born of a recent cross
Clementine does not exist in the wild: it is a hybrid of mandarin and sweet orange, spotted at the end of the nineteenth century in a North African garden and named after the friar Clément who identified it there. It is therefore one of the most recent citruses in the perfumer's palette, and by far the least used. Its essence is obtained as with all citruses, by cold expression from the peel of the fruit — never by distillation, which would destroy its freshness. What does clementine smell like?
Clementine is the gentlest of citruses. Where lemon cuts and grapefruit bites, clementine rounds off: its essence is sweet and juicy, with a very contained acidity and a floral facet that brings it close to neroli. You perceive the zest more than the juice, and sometimes a green leaf edge. Like all citruses it is extremely volatile: it expresses itself in the first minutes and then hands over. Its role is that of an opening — bringing light and an impression of cheerfulness before the heart takes the relay.

Accords and fragrance families
Clementine belongs to citrus perfumes and behaves like them: it opens, then fades. With neroli, orange blossom and petitgrain it reconstitutes the whole bitter orange tree, a very coherent accord. Pink pepper and ginger give it relief; bergamot lends it the bitterness it lacks. To last, it needs a base: white musk, cedar or vetiver are its most frequent supports.
Who is it for, and when?
Clementine is a luminous note with no hidden agenda, perfectly shared. It suits those who like fresh perfumes but find lemon too sharp and bergamot too bitter. Its season is spring and summer, in daytime, and it works particularly well at the office: discreet, clean, never invasive. Do not count on it for longevity — like all citruses it disappears quickly, and the base decides what follows. On warm skin it evaporates faster still. Plan a touch-up, or choose a composition whose heart pleases you as much as its opening.

Since the citrus does not last, judge above all what comes after it: the heart and the base will make up most of your day.
