Coriander in perfumery: the spicy seed of openings
Coriander, seed and not leaf
The coriander of perfumery is not the leaf of the same name, but the seed of Coriandrum sativum, an annual plant in the Apiaceae family. The ripe, dried fruits are steam-distilled to obtain a clear essence, very rich in linalool. The main crops are located in Eastern Europe, Russia, Hungary, and Egypt, with more modest production in France. The seed has accompanied the history of perfume since ancient Egypt, where it was found in funeral ointments. In modern composition, it is mainly used to liven up top notes and provide spicy relief to aromatic and woody accords, without ever weighing them down.
What does coriander smell like?
Coriander smells like a clear spice. One first perceives a sharp, slightly lemony pepperiness, then a floral roundness due to the linalool, close to lavender but without its camphoraceous side. A dry, woody warmth follows, along with a slightly soapy facet that evokes clean skin. Nothing heavy: the material is crisp, almost crystalline. It does not last long on its own, an hour or two, but it completely changes the opening of a formula and prepares for the arrival of the woods. On the skin, it leaves a warm, powdery trail that blends into the base without making itself known. It is a transitional note, discreet and effective.
Coriander perfumes at Soleil d’Or
Enchanted Forestby The Vagabond Prince, composed by Bertrand Duchaufour, uses coriander to stretch an accord of berries and damp woods. Original Vétiverby Creedplaces it at the top, where it brightens the vetiver and prevents any heaviness. At Serge Lutens, Ambre sultanassociates it with aromatic herbs to attack a very dense amber with a green and spicy stroke. Patchouli ManiabyEssential Parfumsuses it as a clear counterpoint to a dark patchouli. In all four cases, the seed acts as a scout: it opens the formula, then fades behind the woods.
Accords and families of coriander
Coriander works by contrast. With cardamomand pepper, it forms lively, unsweetened spicy top notes. Alongside bergamotand hesperidic notes, it extends freshness beyond the first few minutes. It remarkably supports vetiver, sandalwood, and iris, to which it gives a powdery relief. We therefore find it in aromatic perfumes, fougères, and many modern spicy perfumes, as well as in leathers, where its dryness heralds the tannin. Rare are the formulas where it plays the leading role: it acts as a revealer of neighboring materials.
For whom, at what time?
Coriander is a gender-neutral note, without strong connotations. Its spicy freshness makes it easy to wear on a daily basis, from spring to autumn, during the day or at the office. It is particularly suitable for people who find citrus notes too volatile and warm spices too heavy: it occupies exactly the intermediate space. It is also appreciated in temperate climates, where its dryness does not turn into pungency. In terms of olfactory personality, it appeals to those who like discreet but structured perfumes, where detail counts more than volume. On dry skin, it seems more peppery; on oily skin, more floral.
How to choose your coriander perfume?
Judge coriander at the opening, then come back after an hour: that is where the real role it plays in the formula is seen. The custom discovery boxbrings together five hand-composed 2 mL samples, which allows you to test several profiles without making a mistake in your purchase. To start, Original Vétiverprovides a fresh and woody reading, very legible; IRIS CORIANDREshows, on the contrary, the spice at the service of a powdery iris. In our Lille boutique, the team offers to let you smell the seed before the perfumes, so you can recognize its signature later.
