Jean-Claude Ellena: the art of transparency in perfumery
Portrait of a master perfumer born in Grasse
Born in Grasse in 1947 into a family of perfumers, Jean-Claude Ellena trained at the Geneva perfumery school before becoming one of the most influential noses of his generation. Hermès' exclusive in-house perfumer from 2004 to 2016, he brought a pared-back, luminous style, often compared to watercolours or olfactory haikus. He also created classics such as First for Van Cleef & Arpels, Déclaration for Cartier and Terre d'Hermès.
Jean-Claude Ellena's creations at Soleil d'Or
At Soleil d'Or, his compositions unfold from one house to the next. For Perris Monte Carlo, he signs the Grasse soliflores Rose de Mai, Jasmin de Pays, Mimosa Tanneron and Lavande Romaine; for Houbigant, the powdery floral Essence Rare; and for Laboratorio Olfattivo, the citrus Mandarino and Arancia Rossa.
A floral, luminous and transparent signature
Ellena's style favours clarity and restraint: few materials, plenty of air. His trails mostly explore floral and citrus families, around rose, jasmine, mimosa, lavender and bergamot — materials you can follow from one creation to the next at Soleil d'Or.
Who is it for, and when to wear a Jean-Claude Ellena perfume?
His perfumes are for lovers of delicate, refined trails, to wear daily or in fine weather. If you enjoy his writing, you will also appreciate that of Céline Ellena, his daughter, or the luminous florals of Aurélien Guichard and Marie Salamagne, also available at Soleil d'Or.

Jean-Claude Ellena at Soleil d'Or, a Lille perfumery since 1953
Founded in 1953 by Jeanne Muyllaert on Lille's Grand'Place, Soleil d'Or is an independent perfumery passed down through the generations. Hubert Maes (third generation) steered it towards niche perfumery; today his daughters Victorine and Apolline Maes (fourth generation) uphold this standard at 22 rue de la Clef, Lille (59800), with expert advice, guided trials and our olfactory families guide.
