Styrax in perfumery: the leathery resin of liquidambar
Styrax, liquidambar balm
Styrax is a balm, neither a flower nor a wood. It flows from the wounded bark of two trees of the Liquidambar genus: the oriental liquidambar, cultivated in Asia Minor, and its Central American cousin. The trunk is incised, the brown exudate is collected, and it is then purified into a resinoid or absolute. Burned since antiquity in sacred fumigations, it accompanied incenseon the altars of the Levant. Beware of a persistent confusion: benzoin, extracted from a completely different tree, also bears the botanical name Styrax. Contemporary perfumery mainly uses liquidambar resinoid, decolorized and deterpenized to gain clarity.
What does styrax smell like?
Styrax opens with a warm, resinous scent, immediately recognizable: a supple leather, a hint of cinnamon, and dry smoke. Then comes a balsamic sweetness that is almost vanilla-like, brightened by a unique floral facet reminiscent of hyacinth, and sometimes a curious accent of heated plastic. This ambivalence is what makes it so interesting: dark and sweet at once, animalic and comforting. On the skin, it settles slowly, rounds out, and lasts for several hours without fading. An excellent fixative, it prolongs tobaccoaccords, resins, and balms. The sillage remains measured but tenacious: you can perceive it close to you long after spraying.
Styrax perfumes at Soleil d'Or
At NAOMI GOODSIR, Nuit de Bakélitepushes the logic to the extreme: composed by Isabelle Doyen, it intersects a sharp, green tuberose with a heated resin accord where the styrax plays the role of the synthetic material and the leather. Atelier des Orsuses it differently: in Bois Sikar, it melts vetiver and cedar into a smoked tobacco; in Lune Féline, it lines spices and ambergriswith a balsamic velvet. More oriental, Your Oudhnessby JEROBOAMassociates it with oud to thicken the wood. Other compositions in our selection are signed by Marie Salamagne.
Accords and families
Styrax naturally calls for warm materials. With labdanumand benzoin, it builds the framework of amber perfumes: same density, same resinous sweetness. Its animalic and smoky side makes it essential for leather perfumes, where it extends or replaces birch. Its dry smoke goes well with incense and the burnt woods of smoky perfumes. In terms of flowers, it thickens tuberose, carnation, and rose, to which it brings a fleshy base. Gourmands finally use it to anchor vanilla and honey. It is a base material, rarely a soloist, almost always an architect.
For whom, at what time?
Styrax knows no gender. Its balmy sweetness is as seductive as its smoke: it is a frankly unisex material, worn as well by women as by men. We find it mainly in autumn and winter perfumes, where the cold highlights the resins and retains the sillage. Evening suits it well, just like gray days. It is aimed at those who like dense, slightly dark compositions with depth: lovers of leathers, ambers, and orientals rather than citrus freshness. In small quantities, it also warms up white florals that might otherwise seem too demure.
How to choose your styrax perfume?
Styrax is judged over time: you must leave it on the skin for an hour before deciding. The simplest way is to compare at home, in peace. Our bespoke discovery boxbrings together five 2 mL samples composed by hand, chosen with you according to whether you are looking for a leathery, smoky, or vanilla styrax. For a first, more luminous approach, Aventus Cologneby CREEDoffers a fresh and discreet take; the dense versions will come later. You can also come and smell the selection in our boutique in Lille, accompanied by an advisor.
