Parfums de Marly: the spirit of the Château de Marly and Louis XV

Julien Sprecher and the founding of the heritage maison

Parfums de Marly was founded in 2009 in Paris by Julien Sprecher, around a strong heritage concept: transpose the spirit of the Château de Marly — Louis XV's favourite residence, today destroyed — into contemporary haute perfumery. Each fragrance bears the name of a horse from the royal stables (Althaïr, Percival, Pegasus, Layton, Galloway), in compositions that draw from the great French heritage tradition while serving them with contemporary writing. The same Julien Sprecher founded Initio Parfums Privés in 2015, in a complementary register of contemporary neuro-perfumery.

The maison's signature scents

The Parfums de Marly pantheon brings together Althaïr, Percival, Pegasus, Layton and Galloway — a roster of signatures named after horses from the royal stables, whose trails recall the elegance of 18th-century French perfumery.

Layton, the contemporary niche cult

Layton deserves a special mention: created in 2016, it has installed itself among the cults of contemporary luxury niche, with its accord of bergamot, apple, lavender, vanilla, sandalwood, jasmine that creates a signature trail at the crossroads of heritage and contemporary luxury. A creation that demonstrates the maison's writing principle — French heritage tradition served by modern olfactive writing, accessible to a contemporary clientele.

Who is Parfums de Marly for, and when to wear it?

Parfums de Marly speaks to lovers of contemporary luxurious heritage perfumery, who appreciate the Versailles tradition served by modern writing. The house is unisex. Creations cover all the families — oriental, woody, ambery, aromatic and hesperidic — and shine year-round. If you enjoy Parfums de Marly, you will also want to explore Initio (other Sprecher maison), Houbigant Royale Collection and Creed — three other royal heritage signatures at Soleil d'Or.

Frequently asked questions about Parfums de Marly

Who is Julien Sprecher, founder of Parfums de Marly?

Julien Sprecher was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, son of a perfume brand agent (Guerlain) for the Middle East. He took over and developed the family business in the late 1990s distributing the first major niche names — Creed, Le Labo, Atelier Cologne — from Dubai. In 2009, he founded Parfums de Marly inspired by the Chateau de Marly and his passion for thoroughbred horses. Every perfume bears the name of a thoroughbred. He lives between Paris and Dubai. The brand is present in 100 countries, with the United States as the top global market.

Why are the perfumes named after horses?

That is Julien Sprecher's other passion: thoroughbred horses. The Chateau de Marly was also a symbol of Louis XV's love of horses. The famous Chevaux de Marly — sculptures by Guillaume Coustou — have guarded the entrance to the Louvre Museum since 1794. Every perfume therefore bears the name of a thoroughbred: Delina (mare), Layton (stallion), Pegasus, Percival, Herod, Godolphin...

What is the Parfums de Marly best-seller?

Delina is the absolute feminine icon — fruity rose-lychee floral, a TikTok and social media star, one of the most photographed perfumes in the world. Layton is the global masculine bestseller — vanilla-apple-pepper oriental, one of the best-selling masculine perfumes in niche perfumery. Percival (lavender-vanilla aromatic) is very popular. Our feminine discovery set lets you discover the collection.

What is the history of the Chateau de Marly and its link to the brand?

The Chateau de Marly was Louis XV's private residence — a pleasure palace where the king invited a very restricted circle of privileged guests, far from the constraints of Versailles. Louis XV's court was nicknamed the "perfumed court": pouches, fans, gloves and even the fountains were drenched in perfume. The brand logo bears the Chevaux de Marly (sculptures by Guillaume Coustou, 1743) and the year 1743 — the Chateau's restoration date. Julien Sprecher was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, not far from this chateau — hence the natural birth of the project.

Is Parfums de Marly a brand for men or women?

Parfums de Marly offers perfumes for both men and women, without dogma. The feminine collection is dominated by Delina, Cassili, Oriana, Palatine. The masculine collection by Layton, Percival, Pegasus, Herod. Many perfumes like Althair and Habdan are unisex. Julien Sprecher wanted "a collection where everyone dares everything" — without gender constraints.
