Creed: the millésime as a signature
A London house from 1760, Parisian since 1854
James Henry Creed opened a tailoring house in London in 1760 and sent King George III a pair of scented leather gloves. The house moved to Paris in 1854, under the Second Empire, and dressed Empress Eugénie: at that point perfumery was only one part of the work of a tailor known for its riding habits. In the 1970s, Olivier Creed refocused the family business on fragrance. Seven generations have passed the house down, as the official site recounts.
The landmark fragrances of the house
The Creed pantheon brings together Aventus, a woody fruity of pineapple, birch and blackcurrant that became the absolute reference of the house; Green Irish Tweed, an aromatic of mint, violet and sandalwood; Silver Mountain Water, a citrus of tea and blackcurrant over musk; Royal Oud, woody with oud, cardamom and guaiac; Virgin Island Water, a floral citrus of jasmine and tonka bean; and Carmina, a floral amber of rose, saffron and myrrh.
The art of the millésime: maceration by hand
Creed builds its Millésime fragrances from essential oils weighed, blended and macerated by hand in a workshop near Fontainebleau. The formula stays the same from one year to the next, but each harvest gives a slightly different signature, much like wine. You will find Calabrian bergamot, iris Pallida, whose root takes up to six years to prepare, along with vetiver and rose.
Who wears Creed, and when?
The house signs as many masculine fragrances as feminine ones, plus a few unisex such as Wild Vetiver. The citrus and aromatic ones carry spring and summer well; the woody and amber ones come into their own in autumn and winter. If you enjoy this classical writing, explore Parfums de Marly, Houbigant Paris and Lalique too, three other historic signatures at Soleil d'Or.
How to choose your Creed fragrance
Hesitating between Aventus and Green Irish Tweed is normal: one is fruity and solar, the other green and fresh. Our made-to-measure discovery box lets you pick 5 samples of 2 mL, hand-filled from the official juices, and compare them at home before committing to a bottle. To decide faster, our shop at 22 rue de la Clef in Lille offers a guided trial on skin.
Creed at Soleil d'Or, a Lille perfumery since 1953
Founded in 1953 by Jeanne Muyllaert on the Grand'Place in Lille, Soleil d'Or is an independent perfumery passed down from generation to generation. Hubert Maës (third generation) made it a reference for niche perfumery; today his daughters Victorine and Apolline Maës (fourth generation) continue that standard at 22 rue de la Clef, Lille (59800).
