Goutal Paris: the pioneer of French niche signed Annick Goutal

Annick Goutal and the founding of French niche

Goutal Paris is the pioneer house of French niche perfumery, founded in 1981 in Paris by Annick Goutal, one of the rare women perfumers of the niche era — well before Frédéric Malle (2000), Serge Lutens (2000), Jean-Claude Ellena's Les Parfumeries Frédéric Malle. With Eau d'Hadrien (1981) and Petite Chérie (1998), Annick Goutal opened the way for a generation of independent French niche, with a sensibility focused on delicate florals, Provençal hesperidics, and intimate compositions inspired by her own life.

The maison's signature scents

The Goutal pantheon brings together Petite Chérie, Eau d'Hadrien, Étoile d'une nuit, Rose Pompon and La Violette — a roster of refined feminine signatures that have crossed four decades to remain the heart of the maison.

Petite Chérie, the cult of feminine French niche

Petite Chérie deserves a special mention: created in 1998 by Annick Goutal for her own daughter Camille, this perfume of pear, rose, vanilla and white musks has become a cult of intimate French niche — worn by several generations of women who recognise themselves in its tender, comforting, joyful trail. A creation that demonstrates that niche can also speak to the feminine heart with disarming simplicity.

Who is Goutal Paris for, and when to wear it?

Goutal Paris speaks to lovers of refined French niche perfumery, who appreciate delicate florals and refined feminine sensibility. The brand is mainly feminine but offers unisex and masculine creations. Creations sit in the floral, hesperidic, powdery and aromatic families, and shine particularly in spring and summer. If you enjoy Goutal, you will also want to explore Caron Les Romantiques, L'Artisan Parfumeur and Houbigant Quelques Fleurs — three other refined French floral signatures at Soleil d'Or.

Frequently asked questions about Goutal Paris perfumes

Who is Annick Goutal?

Annick Goutal (1945–1999) is one of the most important figures in French perfumery. A piano prodigy, model, antique dealer — she reinvented herself each time until discovering her true calling in Grasse in 1979. An absolute pioneer, she was one of the first women perfumers in a world of men. In 1981, she founded her house and created Eau d'Hadrien — the first icon of French niche perfumery. Her daughter Camille and Isabelle Doyen perpetuate her legacy today.

What is the most famous Goutal Paris perfume?

Eau d'Hadrien is the house's absolute icon — a timeless, elegant hesperidic lemon/cypress created in 1981. It is one of the most widely worn niche perfumes in the world, by both women and men. Petite Chérie (fruity floral from a mother to her daughter) and Songes (exotic nocturnal floral) complete the legendary trio. Our iconic discovery set lets you discover them together.

Which olfactory families does Goutal Paris cover?

Goutal Paris excels in two families: floral perfumes (Petite Chérie, Songes, Un Matin d'Orage, Rose Pompon, Étoile d'une nuit) and hesperidic perfumes (Eau d'Hadrien, Eau du Sud, Le Temps des Rêves). The orientals (Ambre Fétiche, Sables, Nuit et Confidences, Encens Flamboyant) bring depth. The "Oiseaux de nuit" collection is the most chypre-driven. With 46 references, Goutal is the most complete house in our catalogue.

Does Goutal Paris offer refillable bottles?

Yes — the Goutal house has been a pioneer of refillable bottles for over 40 years, long before it became a trend. Eau d'Hadrien and Petite Chérie are notably available in refillable format — a commitment to sustainability that reflects Annick Goutal's founding values. The house also offers a recycling service in its boutiques.

Where to start with Goutal Paris?

For a first encounter with Goutal, Eau d'Hadrien is unmissable — a fresh, universal hesperidic for women and men alike. For something more floral and poetic, Petite Chérie or Songes are the most moving entry points. For an evening, Tenue de Soirée (chypre) or Nuit et Confidences (oriental) are the finest choices. Our iconic discovery set brings together the essential signatures. Our discovery box lets you test your selection before investing.
