Description

"If bergamot is elegant, lemon energetic, and mandarin joyful, the orange is sunny and tragic in its destiny. The town of Ivrea, not far from Turin, commemorates its historic Carnival every February with a battle of oranges. In the past, Portugal's defeat by Spain in 1801 took the name of the War of the Oranges, because Prince Manuel Godoy y Álvarez de Faria sent his mistress, the queen, baskets of fruit to celebrate the victory. The revenge of the oranges was that they were long called Portugual in the making of perfumes. As for Carmen, the tragic end of Bizet's opera* takes place in the Real Maestranza de Caballería in Seville, while outside the merchants' chorus sings to the crowd that rushes into the arena. Of all the stories, my favorite is the offering of oranges at Christmas, a message to say that the end of winter is announced. The orange, a rebellious fruit, is the color of summer.
